Back then, fibreglass sandwich panel construction for caravans was not the norm. Some manufacturers were trending that way, but most were still focussed on‘ stick and tin’ construction. But anyone who knows Ken Nizam knows that he sets a high standard for his brand. He had a vision to build caravans that stood apart from their white, aluminiumclad counterparts.
Thus, Roadstar ventured into fibreglass sandwich panel construction, and this GT Sport Mk2 represented the company’ s first attempt.
As I poked and prodded the van, Ken told me to give it a whack with my fist, so confident was he about the strength of the panels. I asked if I could kick it. He encouraged me to do so. Reaching back to my teen years, in which I obtained a black belt in karate( and represented Victoria in various tournaments, believe it or not), I treated the van like it was a training bag held by my old instructor. The van did not dent – had I given the same treatment to almost any other van at the time, the cladding would’ ve buckled like a soft drink can.
I don’ t make a habit of karatekicking caravans, but I’ ve never forgotten that. Fancy being told by a caravan manufacturer to put the boot into his new pride and joy! It said a lot about Ken’ s confidence in his product, and he hasn’ t lowered his high standards since.
