Since we last spoke, I’ ve been on a little jaunt on Victoria’ s Mornington Peninsula inside a new B class motorhome from Avida, the Explorer LX. The trip started with a night in a campground in the Dandenong Ranges and let me tell you, camping in the depths of a southern winter is one of life’ s more interesting endeavours.

As the fire was roaring and we enjoyed its warmth, the heavens opened. Everything was packed away quick smart, but the fire had to be saved. Not wanting to move the van so that the awning covered the flames – not a good idea, really – I stood over the fire with a ground mat folded over me, which kept both me and the fire dry. Holding my breath to avoid copping a lungful, I’ d turn my head into the rain in order to exhale and inhale once again, but that didn’ t stop my eyes from stinging.

Fortunately, the rain passed quickly, but I learned a valuable lesson for winter camping: have a spare stack of dry firewood. That way, if an unexpected rain comes along, you won’ t find yourself desperately improvising a way to keep your fire going!
