TRAVELS WITH KINGDEANO ADVENTURES
We’ ve always been drawn to historic towns, so when we heard that Burra, SA, offered a literal key to unlock its past, we couldn’ t wait to go.
We began our adventure at the visitor information centre, paying a small deposit for the Burra Heritage Passport. This ingenious tour gives holders a real metal key that accesses 11 locked National Heritage sites, such as the Mine site, Morphett’ s Engine House, and Redruth Gaol, alongside a detailed map and guidebook covering many historic locations.
When we were looking at campsite options, we learned that the local caravan park was fully booked. Luckily, they pointed us to Paxton Square Cottages across the street. These charming bluestone cottages, once miners ' family homes, were recently renovated, complete with kitchenettes, bathrooms, airconditioning, TV, free wi‐fi and ample van parking. The Square also had a cottage set-up in traditional style and was accessible with our Passport key, offering an immersive step back into 19th-century family life.
With our Passport Key and accommodation sorted, we strolled into town. We stocked up at the local IGA, enjoyed hearty pub meals, and found coffee and pastries at cosy cafés and the bakery. Antique shops abounded, selling everything from oil lamps to medieval armour, alongside boutique clothing stores. Friendly locals in the bakery and pubs shared stories, reinforcing the communal warmth at the heart of Burra.
