DAY 4
MALLACOOTA TO EDEN
We farewelled club members Greg and Marylyn, and Alan and Meryl, as they headed back to Melbourne, leaving five caravans to continue the journey. Our day’ s destination was Eden, a trip of 79km. Therefore, there was no hurry to get away early. We departed Mallacoota at 10am and arrived at Eden about 11am.
Today was left free to explore the town. One member had to undertake some repairs to his water pump, having developed a leak, but it was quickly fixed. A large cruise ship was in port. It was interesting to see as it dwarfed the dock area. After happy hour we went to a lookout point to see the ship depart and head out to sea.
The track to Pebbly Beach.
Loch-Ard boat cruise on Mallacoota Lakes.
DAY 5
EDEN
We woke to rain, which didn’ t stop until 2pm. The trip we planned to Green Cape Lighthouse was cancelled, so we decided to go to the Killer Whale Museum instead. The museum had a large number for artefacts based on the shorebased whaling industry and told the interesting story of the unique working relationship between the whalers and killer whales of Twofold Bay.
As whales headed south, the killer whales would herd and hold other whale species into Twofold Bay and alert whalers of their presence. The whalers in return would reward the killer whales with parts of the harvested whales. The skeleton of‘ Old Tom’, the most famous of these killer whales, is on display as the centrepiece of the exhibits.
