What’ s the worst thing that’ s happened to you on the road? I’ ve been relatively fortunate. I’ ve damaged stuff, but only ever property that could be fixed. I’ ve never been stranded, sick or lost. No snake bites, though I did once come a little too close for comfort with a funnel web spider when camped in Lane Cove National Park, NSW. Imagine my shock when I moved a pair of jeans on the tent floor only to be greeted by one of those unholy, hairy creatures.

Next to injury or worse, theft would have to be the worst thing that could happen, but better for it to happen when the van is in your driveway than in the back of Beyond. That’ s what happened to me. The camper was in the driveway. The next morning, it wasn’ t. I’ d forgotten to fit the wheel clamp upon returning from a trip.

It was therefore with some irony that I found myself looking at anti-theft devices for this issue … all made and distributed by the company that built my stolen camper. Worse, the company also made the wheel clamp that I had failed to fit! Take your van’ s security seriously. A few bucks spent on a visually obvious anti-theft device could be the best money you ever spent.
