TRAVELS WITH KINGDEANO ADVENTURES
The drive to Camperdown felt like we were following the yellow brick road to Oz. Golden canola fields stretched endlessly on either side, glowing under the sun like a sea of sunshine. As we rolled into town, the majestic Camperdown clock tower greeted us like a proud gatekeeper.
Standing at 31m, this Gothic Revival-style tower anchors the town’ s main street and is flanked by the Avenue of Honour and beautiful historic buildings, such as the 1863 Post Office. The tower was funded by the pioneering Manifold family in memory of Thomas Peter Manifold, who died in a hunting accident in 1895. We made sure to be nearby on the hour just to hear the deep, rich chimes of the great bells echo across town.
All that walking worked up an appetite, so we stopped at The Loaf & Lounge Bakery. Its display cabinet was bursting with colour – cakes, slices, sandwiches, and pies galore. Adam couldn’ t resist grabbing a family-sized strawberry vanilla slice, and we both ordered toasted sandwiches. Thick-cut bread loaded with toppings, toasted to perfection – it was everything we needed and more.
After soaking in some of the local heritage, we wandered into local shops, including one of our favourites, Vintage Gnotuk. Nestled among elm trees, it’ s a haven of vintage homewares and pieces from Australian artists. With its warm, rustic farmhouse feel, it’ s the kind of shop you could get lost in.
