THE LARGEST BRIDGE?
This is another question that should get the battle of the states firing up. Melbournians will swear black and blue that the Westgate Bridge, with a length of 2.5km, would have to hold that honour, but they would be wrong. People of Hobart may claim the Tasman Bridge has got to be close, but it ' s way down the list at just under 1.4km.
It so happens that Australia’ s longest bridge is the Macleay Valley Bridge, which is part of the Kempsey Bypass. Consisting of 941 concrete beams supported by 93 piers, it stretches 3.2km across the Macleay River floodplain.
Other notable bridges include the South Road Superway in Adelaide, with a length of 2.8km, the Houghton Highway and the Ted Smout Memorial Bridge, both in Brisbane, and both coming in at 2.74km.
Wherever you’ re travelling these Christmas holidays, please take care on the roads. Take your time and enjoy your trips away with family and friends. Safe travels!
