LETTERS FROM THE ROAD

TRUCKIE TIRADE
As a truckie-turned-caravanner, I can’ t say that I agree with Stuart Lamont’ s suggestion that truck drivers don’ t make good caravanners( Tow & Tell podcast). I know he was being a little tongue in cheek, but in all honesty, don’ t we have enough problems between truckies and caravanners not sharing the road properly, without adding fuel to the fire?
At least truck drivers have a lengthy career at the helm of a big vehicle to guide them on the road. Many people just buy a big 4WD and caravan without any experience, and then wonder why things go wrong!

KINDNESS IS FREE
I want to say a big thank you to the gentleman who stopped to help me change the tyre on my little motorhome on the outskirts of Broken Hill in early February. As a female travelling solo, I go to a lot of effort to make sure I have covered all my bases so that I can get myself back on the road if something happens. However, one thing I didn’ t do was check that my spare tyre had sufficient air in it before I left home. It didn’ t. I was in the process of rolling it by hand to the nearest petrol station( about 2km away) when a fellow traveller pulled up to ask if I needed help.
Fortunately, he and his lovely wife had a small air-compressor in their van, and before long, my spare tyre was re-inflated and secured to my motorhome. I drove the punctured tyre immediately to get fixed in Broken Hill, and was eventually back on my way.
It’ s so lovely to discover such friendly, helpful people on the road. May I suggest to all travellers, if you see someone in need and you’ re in a position to help, please do so – it might be five minutes of your time, but it could make the world of difference to someone else.
