Adding a long range tank will allow you to reach those faraway free camps.
LONG-RANGE TANKS: A BIGGER COMMITMENT
If you regularly venture into remote areas, an aftermarket long-range fuel tank might be worth considering. These replace or supplement your factory tank, significantly increasing capacity without the need for external containers.
They are not cheap and may not be available for every vehicle, but for serious tourers setting up an overlanding rig, they are a tidy and practical solution. There are even replacement and auxiliary tanks designed to use otherwise wasted space in a ute tray or underbody.
The key with fuel is planning. Know your consumption, factor in headwinds, sand driving or towing, and always build in a safety margin. Running out of fuel is inconvenient at best and dangerous at worst.
Storing fuel jerry cans securely on your roof rack is another option.
POWER: KEEPING COLD STUFF COLD
Few things ruin a hot afternoon like discovering your fridge has stopped and the steaks and the beers are warm.
Free-camping means you are responsible for your own power supply. Whether you are running a compressor fridge, lights, water pump, chargers or a diesel heater, you need a reliable way to replenish your batteries.
