WATER: THE NON- NEGOTIABLE
Fuel and power are about convenience and capability. Water is about survival. A common rule of thumb is a minimum of 2L of drinking water per person, per day. That is just for hydration. Add water for cooking, washing dishes, basic hygiene and perhaps a quick shower, and your daily requirement climbs quickly.
When planning a free-camp, calculate your expected usage and then add a buffer. Hot weather, extra activity or delays will increase consumption.
REDUCING USAGE
Simple strategies can stretch your supply. Baby wipes can reduce the need for full-body washes. Use minimal water when washing dishes. Collect rainwater if appropriate and safe. Every couple of litres saved is another day off-grid.
A petrol generator is effective but noisy.
The 20L Front Runner Pro water tank comes with a tap.
CARRYING OPTIONS
Jerry cans remain a flexible solution. Unlike fuel, water containers can be carried inside the vehicle, on roof racks, or in rear bar holders. Ensure you purchase containers specifically designed for potable water.
Be mindful that plastic degrades over time, particularly under UV exposure. Inspect regularly for cracks, especially if mounted externally, where stone damage can occur. Bottles and casks from supermarkets or service stations are useful for separating your supply. If one leaks or becomes contaminated, you have not lost everything.
Fixed water tanks in caravans are available in poly or stainless steel. Stainless steel tanks are durable and help maintain fresh taste, while poly tanks are lighter and often more affordable.
