FREEDOM CAMP OF THE MONTH
If you’ re crossing the Red Centre, don’ t just drive past Curtin Springs. Experience it!
The station has a free camp; however, you do need to pay for showers and to top-up with water. There are toilets on site, you can fill up with fuel here and even order a meal!
We checked out the old‘ bough shed’, the original Severin family homestead from 1956. Built from desert oak, chicken wire and spinifex, it once kept the family cool with nothing more than a sprinkler on the roof. Today, it’ s a cracking beer garden.
This is a working station – over one million acres – and the only one in Central Australia breeding Murray greys. While in the area, why not join a tour of Mount Conner or the nearby salt lakes?
The meals at Curtain Springs are hearty. Just don’ t miss the cut-off times – lunch before 2pm, dinner orders before 6.30pm. Breakfast is worth it too, just don’ t expect to finish it solo – I ' m glad we shared!
The facilities are simple. You can pay for the caravan park( with power and facilities) or stay in the free camp. If you do stay, support the business. That’ s how places like this keep offering these facilities.
We’ ve driven past before on the way to Uluru and didn’ t stop. That was a mistake. There’ s more here than you might expect and it’ s worth slowing down for.
Quick tip: also stop at the Mt Conner lookout just east of the station. Walk the dunes across the road and you’ ll find salt lakes too! As always, leave no trace and support the stop.
