Early the next morning, the towie arrived and loaded us all up. The drive to Cairns was a slow process, but the towie was accomodating of our needs at the time with the two toddlers. We dropped the ute at the dealership and the towie parked us up at a caravan park, and finally we could breathe a sigh of relief.
What came next was weeks, which turned to a month, of our ute being out of action as the diagnosis and repairs went on. Fortunately, all the works were covered under warranty. However, the cost of staying at a fancy Cairns caravan park for an extended period was hurting us.
Weeks turned into a month of waiting for the vehicle to be repaired.
Our solution was to pick up some work in a nearby town. With all the extra time we spent in the Cairns area, we not only got to have a good look around from a tourist’ s point of view, we also got to experience life in the area as a local, as we made friends with the locals at work and saw things from their point of view too. Another experience that we would not have had if it wasn’ t for our breakdown.
By the time we finished the work contract, our ute was operational once again and we continued our life on the road. This was not the only disaster we faced on the road. It wasn’ t even the first; however, it did cause us the most disruption. Even still, thanks to our prior planning in anticipation of such events, it all went about as well as it could have. These days, the satphone has been replaced by Starlink but the RACQ Ultra Care gets renewed every year without hesitation, even on the years when we are not on the road full time.
