When it comes to the build quality of caravans and motorhomes in Australia, one of the talking points has always been that they are‘ hand built’ products. Therefore, the argument goes, there should be some allowance or understanding from the customer in the event that there is a fault with the van.
When something is built by the hands of humans, there is a chance that something will go wrong down the track.
But what if caravans and motorhomes weren’ t built by human hands? What if a fleet of humanoid robots was behind every chassis, every tightened screw, every water tank and every wire? What sort of RV would result from such automation?
While I was at this year’ s Caravan Industry Victoria Trade Expo, held in early August, I met 3PO, a humanoid robot from Swinburne University’ s Factory of the Future. And the future suddenly seemed a little concerning. Let me explain …
MEET 3PO
As a lowly human incapable of seeing things from the perspective of a robot, I decided, ironically, to ask ChatGPT about how a humanoid robot might benefit RV manufacturing in Australia. The AI agreed: caravan manufacturing is unusually suited to humanoid robots. But that’ s what you’ d expect an AI to say.
The notion that robots are coming for the caravan industry’ s jobs is highly speculative. Instead, 3PO and the Factory of the Future were there to demonstrate the capabilities of humanoid robots, and how they might one day be used in a factory environment, including the factories of caravan manufacturers.
Some caravan factories already use industrial robotics, such as collaborative robots, and of course though they’ re not robotic, CNC machines have removed much of the manual labour involved in furniture construction.
