ALISON’ S FIRST FAREWELL TOUR
The ones that have stuck in my mind are the Umpherson Sinkhole, the Cave Gardens and the Big Blue Blob. I never thought I would be able to walk down into a sinkhole and have a walk around it. The Cave Gardens were the same sort of thing – go down into a big hole and there’ s the entrance to the cave. As for the Big Blue Blob, well, it’ s not exactly popular with the townspeople, according to the ones who talked to us. But it’ s big, blue and looks great in a photo.
One day trip out to Kalangadoo was so worth it. There’ s a farmers’ market and a café in what looks like an old church. In one corner, a man was sitting making animals out of wire and fencing wire. I have never seen anything like that before.
Our next stop was Robe. The Robe Holiday Park is new and really great. We hadn’ t stayed at this one before but we would definitely go back. The Obelisk has always been a highlight of our trips here, but you cannot get close to it now. The ocean is re-arranging the coastline so you can see it from the other side of a fence. There’ s a new lookout tower in that area, well worth a visit.

For me, we had two amazingly lucky events. One was the primary school fete. There were hundreds of people there, and it was packed with things to do and things to buy! Plus the Robe Town Brewery had a music afternoon and we had a wonderful time. Not many people were clapping, but we were! In the end, we were invited to join the two musicians known as The Longbeach Pickers. I don’ t sing or play an instrument, so we just pretended!
After many years of wondering where it was, we found the Giant Lobster in Kingston SE, about 50km from Robe. Another tourist‘ must’ ticked off our list!
