TRAVELS WITH KINGDEANO ADVENTURES
We couldn ' t visit Rochester without taking a closer look at the silo art. Painted by renowned mural artist Jimmy D’ Vate, the artwork features native Australian wildlife, including an azure kingfisher, squirrel glider and honeyeater. Our favourite discovery was around the back, where a magnificent platypus mural adds another delightful surprise. Make sure you walk right around the silo so you don ' t miss it!
That evening, we decided to cook in the van, and having the local IGA just across the railway tracks made stocking up easy. Rochester has endured devastating floods over the years, and flood markers around town offer a sobering reminder of the challenges the community has faced.
We had hoped to visit the Rochester Sports Museum at the railway station, but it was closed during our stay. Its collection of sporting memorabilia is definitely something to add to our list for next time.
The following morning, we explored the unique local shops, discovered more street art and admired historical stories painted on building walls. Near the river, carved birds and a platypus added a lovely finishing touch. We didn ' t have time to explore the Riverwalk, but it ' s another reason to return.
Before heading to our next destination, we stopped at the local bakery for pies and coffee, while Adam picked up some delicious sweets for the road.
Our overnight stay in Rochester reminded us that sometimes the best travel discoveries happen when you slow down and look beyond the main attraction. With free-camping, country hospitality, fascinating history and colourful art, Rochester is well worth a stop, whether for a night or a longer stay.
For us, there ' s still a Riverwalk to explore and a sports museum to visit. Rochester, we ' ll be back!
