HITCHING UP WITH MAX TAYLOR

OFFROAD OFFENCE
What in heck does the term ‘offroad’ actually mean? I suppose, strictly speaking, my nature strip is off the road and, therefore, even my wife’s Commodore wagon is heading offroad when she parks there. I’m being flippant, of course, but the question is legitimate. When offroad variants are being offered by almost every caravan manufacturer, it is worth wondering what the word truly means in a caravanning context. This issue, we’ve shone our light on this dilemma. The reality is, I believe, that the word ‘offroad’ has become a catch-all to describe any caravan or other trailer built to leave the bitumen, however briefly. It’s not an industry- wide situation, mind you, but it’s wide enough. Because this word has been co-opted, or because it is not particularly specific, do we need to rethink how caravan types are categorised? ‘Semi- offroad’ is, perhaps, just as confusing. And, for argument’s sake, if a ‘semi-offroader’ suddenly and unexpectedly encounters ‘offroad’ terrain, with no room to turn the van around, would the van still be covered under warranty as its owner negotiates the ‘offroad’ terrain looking for a way out? Further, should ‘offroad’ vans be equipped (power, water, etc.) for lengthy periods off the road, away from the crowds? Before buying, ask lots of questions. Check the warranty.

And safe travels.
