Located 140km north-east of Alice Springs on the Plenty Highway , Gemtree is a working cattle station but it also sits within a huge gemfield noted for yielding garnets .
The campground at Gemtree is fantastic . The individual sites are huge and placed in an open area with plenty of trees for shade and open fireplaces at every site . Power and water is available , meaning you can run your airconditioner during hot weather .
Be aware that during the dry season , temperatures here can plummet at night so being able to run an electric blanket is also a bonus .
