NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE

LIONEL MUSSELL RECOUNTS HOW A FAULT WITH HIS VAN ’ S ELECTRIC BRAKES NEARLY KILLED HIM .
These days nearly all caravans have electric brakes but I came close to death when I applied my new van ' s electric brakes to stop a small sway on what was then called the Gosforth Freeway .
The sway turned into a nerveshattering out-of-control swerve from one side of the three-lane road to the other .
It was a single-axle van and I found out later that one caravan brake had not been working , so when I applied the override , it seriously increased the sway .
From then on I always checked the brake ’ s operation every day , as soon as the van was rolling .
When reversing onto sites in caravan parks , I asked Vi to pick an obvious item , like a toilet block , and then tell me to head the van towards the object or away from it . This tip could save a few marriages !
An important thing I learned was making sure the van was level when hooked up and ensuring it had the proper load on the towbar . This often came back to correct loading of the van .
