YOU MIGHT THINK A DIESEL TOW VEHICLE IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO FOR ANYTHING BIGGER THAN A CAMPER TRAILER . BUT IS THIS REALLY TRUE ?
The 4.5L petrol 80 Series towed well but it was thirsty .
Towing has changed a lot in the last 30 years , and will change again with the shift to EVs or PHEVs in the next 30 years . Historically , recreational towing used to almost certainly involve a petrol-powered tow vehicle . The old family Falcon was the go-to towing vehicle . Vans were generally much lighter , fuel was much cheaper and towing regulations were more relaxed .
We all know what has happened since , with caravans slowly but surely growing bigger and heavier , with more gear inside . More retirees entered the van market , wanting big vans with items such as air-conditioning , an ensuite and a larger , more comprehensive kitchen for the big lap .
