WHERE CAN YOU FREE-CAMP ?
Free-camping is camping for free or at a low cost ( also known as ‘ freedom camping ’). This can be at camping grounds or in permitted areas . Some of these campgrounds have communal areas , such as picnic tables , public bathrooms and showers . Not all do , however , so it is best to check before you arrive .
Some campgrounds may also ask for a small donation that goes towards maintenance of the area .
Examples of permitted areas can include rest stops , some national parks ( although you may need to purchase a pass or camping permit ), and other signed areas . If you choose to free-camp in an area where it is not permitted , you risk being fined by council . These rules differ state to state so always check in advance . This can be done on government and tourism websites .
In order to free-camp , your RV should be self-contained . This means having your own water , power , waste and grey water storage , as you are unlikely to have access to all of these facilities in campgrounds ( grey water storage is required for staying in national parks ). This is why the sites are free or at a low cost . Doing so also allows you to free-camp in more areas that don ’ t have public facilities .
It is also worth noting that some free-camping areas have a time limit ( such as one-night only ). Make sure you do your research on this before arriving and observe any time limits .
