I reckon it ’ s all too easy to get carried away in the process of purchasing a new caravan . If you ’ re not careful , you ’ ll end up with a van that ’ s priced well beyond your initial budget and , just as bad , a van that can ’ t be legally and safely towed by the 4WD sitting in your garage .

Our tow vehicle is a 2018 MU-X ; however , its 3000kg towing capacity makes it less than ideal when towing something particularly big and heavy .

To overcome this , Isuzu Ute Australia has loaned us a new D-MAX ute for six months , and we intend to test it out in all manner of conditions over the next few issues , with everything from tandem-axle monsters to single-axle cuties hitched behind . We ’ ll also report on fuel usage figures as well as our general impressions .

Ultimately , the best , most luxurious caravan in the world is not much more than an expensive cubby house in the backyard if it isn ’ t matched to a suitable vehicle . Though I ’ ve towed plenty of vans with the D-MAX in the past , it will be interesting to see how it performs under a variety of conditions , and I hope you find our coming updates on this particular vehicle useful .
