RV SAFETY
INSPECTIONS
The issue of RV safety came to
the fore at this year’s Melbourne
Leisurefest, with about 20
caravans and motorhomes
independently inspected for
safety and compliance.
The Caravan Industry
Association of Victoria (CIAV)
teamed up with Everything
Caravan and Camping, Victoria
Police, VicRoads, Energy Safe
Victoria and the Victorian
Building Authority to voluntarily
inspect RVs belonging to
members of the public.

The initiative was focussed
on education, rather than
enforcement. Though Acting
Sergeant Graeme Shenton
was on hand, he wasn’t
writing tickets; instead, he
formed part of the inspection
team that ensured the gas
and electrical systems, as well
as the weights and general
compliance, of each van

were in order.
Victoria Police, VicRoads
and Everything Caravan and
Camping checked the weights
of each tow vehicle and van
by placing them on a set of
portable scales. Energy Safe
Victoria and the Victorian
Building Authority assessed

appliances, lines and that
all components adhered to
relevant regulations.
The electrical system of
each van was inspected by
