STAMPEDE To follow the Dinosaur Trail and get to some land lizards, you will have to divert south to Winton before returning north to Hughenden on the Flinders Hwy. The Matilda Country Tourist Park is the main caravan park in town. The brilliant Waltzing Matilda Centre is under re- construction after a fire in June of 2015; meanwhile the information centre is on Elderslie Street. Here you can find out about and book a tour of the Dinosaur Stampede National Monument at Lark Quarry Conservation Park (110km SW of Winton, bookings are mandatory). The stampede site is fascinating; guides bring to life the dramatic events of a single day 95 million years ago when two small species of dinosaurs, totalling about 150 individuals, came to drink beside a lake and were attacked by a theropod. Hundreds of footprints reveal the ensuing panic and chaos. Riveting and unforgettable! Also near Winton is the Australian Age of Dinosaurs (24km SE). This museum offers tours that include their Fossil Preparation Lab, the Collection Room that houses the most complete examples of Australovenator wintonsis (aka Banjo) and Diamantinasaurus matildae (aka Matilda) along with others, and Dinosaur Canyon with life-size dinosaur gorv.com.au 31
