FREEDOM CAMP OF THE MONTH
The little border town in Queensland known as Hebel does not have much of a population , but it does boast not one but two free camps ! Plus , it is not often we come across a free caravan park . However , if you visit Hebel , there is a free camp at Hebel Caravan Park and Cafe , and another behind the Hebel Hotel . And both are pet-friendly !
Another quirk is carrying your plated dinner across the Castlereagh Highway , so you can eat at the hotel . They come with a tin plate to keep it warm , like you might see in a hospital . But our burger was so yummy for lunch that we ordered the ‘ Hebel Experience ’ at dinner time .
In fact , the whole setup is quirky . Just visit the bar and try leaning on it ! You ' ll know if you have tried – it has a definite slope to it . However , this historic former Cobb & Co stop now has new cabins , a warming fire out the front and humorous John Murray murals .
We loved our overnight here , catching up with other travellers and friendly locals in the beer garden .
The caravan park has toilets and free showers , and it is just $ 22 per night if you want power .
No wonder there were plenty of travellers camping ! Hebel Caravan Park can accommodate many more on the large gravel surface .
The character-filled Hebel Hotel has a smaller free camp parking area compared to that of the cafe .
While in this area , take the time to enjoy the western sunrises and sunsets , and be sure to stop at the Hebel Historical Circle and soak up the local history . You ' ll even find a bushranger tale and spot touches of Ned Kelly !
There is a playground for the kids , just next to the Historical Circle , on the caravan park side of the highway .
