TRAVELS WITH KINGDEANO ADVENTURES
At the information office , we also picked up some headsets and keys to spend some time on a pet-friendly self-guided tour of the closed Gundagai Gaol . The gaol occasionally conducts night tours , and we were advised that the gaol was supposedly haunted ! On our gaol tour , we learned the story of the local bushranger Moonlight Cassidy . For lunch , we headed to the art deco café , Niagara Cafe . The café has recently been refurbished by the new owners yet retains many of the charms and original features of its 1938 heyday . We enjoyed some burgers , chips , and shakes , sitting outside of the diner , with Twyla resting under the table .
Twyla on the Tuckerbox !
On our way back to camp , we popped into the Gundagai Heritage Museum , which had the famous ‘ Gundagai ’ song playing . The museum displayed many local and pioneering historical pieces of the region , plus more recent items of interest , such as old telephones , fridges , and a vintage car .
For breakfast , we headed to Gundagai Bakery , which claims to be the oldest-running bakery in Australia ! In true Aussie style , we had a pie for breakfast and bought some cookies for the road . Both were delicious .
On the way out of town , we pulled our campervan off the freeway to see the Dog on the Tuckerbox ourselves , and like I did as a child , we got some photos to remember our family visit to the town . Gundagai is a small , friendly town with a lot to do and it ’ s one of our favourite towns we have visited .
