SENIORS AT GREATEST ROAD RISK :

REPORT

According to an analysis of 1266 road fatalities in Australia in 2023 , Australian seniors have a greater risk of dying in a road crash than any other cohort , at 9.2 deaths per 100,000 people .
The study was conducted by a website called Tyre Geek , which is primarily concerned with vehicle tyres but takes an interest in all road safety matters . The analysis relied upon data reported to the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics . In the wash-up , it was shown that Australians aged 80-89 were at the highest risk of dying in a road accident .
The analysis also found that motorcyclists made up 20 per cent of all road fatalities despite making up just one per cent of all passenger-vehicle kilometres .
Men made up 75.9 per cent of road fatalities in 2023 . The Darling Downs and Maranoa regions of Queensland , along with the New England and north-west region of New South Wales , were the most ‘ dangerous ’, each with 21.7 deaths per 100,000 residents .
Outback Queensland and Shepparton , Vic , followed with 20.6 and 20.5 deaths per 100,000 residents respectively .
According to the study , September was the most ‘ dangerous ’ month , with 10.3 per cent of all fatalities , while the ACT was shown to be the ‘ safest ’ state / territory , with 0.9 deaths per 100,000 residents .
