THE FRONT BOOT
KEYLESS CARAVAN ENTRY
Fact: Australian caravans have too many keys. One for the door, one for the front boot, one for the tunnel boot, one for the barbecue locker … and on it goes. It’ s unlikely we’ ll see this change in the near future – though Camec does sell a‘ one key fits all’ system that can be retrofitted – but an innovation by this same company is helping with the battle against key overload. The Camec Keyless Entry System lets you instead swipe a fob or wristband against the RV door latch. The latch will automatically unlock and open. Both the wristband and fob are completely waterproof – Camec says there is no danger of damaging the electronics within if, for example, you wore the band in the ocean. The Keyless Entry System is permanently wired to the van’ s 12V system. As part of the installation, two metal contacts are fitted to the door jam, with corresponding contacts on the door itself, to power the system. According to Camec, the system draws minimal current. Should the van’ s battery run flat, the system has a backup: four AA batteries behind a panel. And should those batteries run flat, or all fobs / wristbands are lost, there’ s a last line of defence: a standard Camec key to unlock the door. The fobs / wristbands are individually coded to each lock, and the electronic communication between the fob / wristband and lock is encrypted. Each system is supplied with three fobs – two general fobs and a red‘ master’ fob – but the system can accommodate up to six fobs. New fobs and wristbands can only be programmed using the master fob. The system itself can be retrofitted to existing Camec triple-lock doors, whether left or right-hinged, and the company is rolling it out to manufacturers now, so it’ s bound to be widely available soon from factory. Having the Camec Keyless Entry System fitted is not the
LOOK, NO KEY! same as having a caravan keyed alike – it won’ t unlock your water fillers, for example. But it will reduce the amount of keys in your pocket, and it has one distinct advantage: you can leave those bulky keys behind in the caravan while you head to the beach or out shopping with only a wallet and fob in your pocket, or perhaps the band on your wrist.
