HITCHING UP WITH MAX TAYLOR SUMMER LOVIN’ Summer is upon us. It’s time to pull the van out of storage, spread the maps out on the kitchen table, and start planning the next trip. When my van has been sedentary for a couple of months, before hitting the road I like to jack it up, put it on stands, and rock each wheel – as you know, excessive movement can indicate worn wheel bearings. I’ll rotate the tyres, use a soap solution to check for gas leaks, check that the brake lights and indicators are functional, and even go so far as to clean up light rust on the drawbar and chassis. A go- over with a wire brush, some rust converter, finished with a coat of Cold Gal – the hardware store that looks like a big green shed gets a lot of my money at this time of year. The smoke detector inside the van gets a new battery and the fridge is inspected for operation. I do, however, de-scale the storage tank by introducing wine vinegar to the main water supply as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. Yes, the pre-trip maintenance schedule sometimes seems daunting and I’ve only scratched the surface here. But in the interest of a hassle- free trip, don’t overlook it.
