FREEDOM CAMP OF THE MONTH
If you are interested in bushranger history , a campsite that should be on your list is Stringybark Creek , north-east of Mansfield , Vic .
It was here that Ned Kelly ’ s gang murdered and wounded three policemen , becoming Australia ’ s most wanted outlaws . Unlike some of the other sites on the ‘ Ned Kelly Trail ’, this one pays homage to the policemen while documenting the attacks and lead-up to the 1878 shootings at Stringybark Creek .
Spend time wandering around the historic site and memorials . This day-use area is quite separate from the camping zone . You can also follow the tracks from those fateful days .
The large campground has toilets , fire pits , loads of room and different areas . Stringybark Creek is a tiny gully , all located within Toombullup State Forest .
We actually camped up the road at Toombullup School Site . This spot is much smaller with no creek , but it did us just fine ! We roasted chicken and vegetables on the barbecues provided , and had the spot to ourselves .
