THE DEEP BLUE

THREE THINGS YOU SIMPLY HAVE TO DO WHEN VISITING MOUNT GAMBIER , SA …

The second largest town in South Australia , Mount Gambier , lies in the heart of the Limestone Coast , halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne . The region boasts more than 800 lava caves and 50 sinkholes , formed more than 5000 years ago from volcanic eruptions . It is truly a geological wonderland !
Here are our top three must-dos when staying in Mount Gambier :
1 . CAMP BESIDE THE CRATER OF AN ANCIENT VOLCANO
We set-up camp at the Big 4 Blue Lake Holiday Park , which was the perfect base to explore this incredible region . It is close enough to walk the 3.6km track around the circumference of Blue Lake , aptly named for the striking colour of the water .
Each summer , the lake mysteriously changes to an intense deep turquoise , almost overnight , and remains that colour until early March , when it gradually changes back to a sombre blue .
