April was‘ free camp’ month for the Coromal Caravan Owners Club of Victoria. We’ d been to Smythesdale Gardens, near Ballarat, Vic, once before, two years ago. The weather then was bleak. But not this time. Cool in the mornings, but lovely during each day. Diesel heaters were used sparingly.
There was very little grass cover on our reserved area, which formerly was the site of the Yellow Glen Distillery, but no dust. All caravans had their wheels jacked up just a few inches on the downslope. There was plenty of room, though. We were close to the limited, but clean, amenities, including a shower.
And so it was that by the Friday evening, everyone registered to attend had arrived. Members: Andrews, Axford, Bedggood, Bloomfield, Booth, Caruso, Gilson, Marshall, Simmons and White. Ten caravans. Twenty members. An excellent group – as always. I nearly forgot: there were six dogs, too, all well behaved.
Happy hour was at 4pm. Dinner was later held around resident pyrotechnic JB’ s fire with wood bought locally. Some retired to their vans, others stayed to socialise, enjoying a sip or two, maybe a hot chocolate.
