NOW THAT 12V GURU DAVID BAYLISS HAS ANSWERED SOME OF THOSE QUESTIONS YOU WERE‘ TOO AFRAID TO ASK’, LET’ S TURN OUR ATTENTION TO WHAT THE AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS SAY ABOUT THE INSTALLATION OF LITHIUM BATTERIES IN RVS.
The installation of lithium batteries in RVs is covered by AS / NZ3001.2:2022 and applies from November 2023. It covers minimum specifications for lithium batteries, safety approvals to IEC 62619, the monitoring of batteries, exclusion zones, and the location, sealing and venting of lithium batteries.
CLAUSE 5.4.12.3.1 Minimum battery requirements
“ Each lithium ion battery shall be provided with a battery management safety system either integrated into a battery pack or as a separate component. All lithium ion batteries shall comply with IEC 62619.”
David says:
“ A battery management safety system is designed to protect a lithium ion battery from potentially damaging situations.
“ It’ s important to ensure that the battery manufacturer or supplier can provide the certificate or letter of compliance to verify that the batteries are compliant to IEC 62619.
“ If the batteries are not compliant, the key safety components of the battery management system of the battery, and how it interacts and manages the cells, has not been considered and reviewed. This is especially important regarding battery cell propagation and thermal runaway, and the battery is unable to be installed in compliance with AS / NZS3001.2:2022.”
