TESTING THE QUATTRO
Was I dubious? Not at all! But the real test was to come. I’ ve used caravan movers before, but only the type that replaces the jockey wheel. On that topic: the fact that the Quattro drives the van at its wheels, where about 90 per cent of the van’ s weight is being supported, is touted by Purpline as a major benefit of the Quattro, when compared to the other style of caravan mover. It should help to prevent the wheels of the van from digging in or slipping on loose surfaces.
The guys at Purpeline had set out a small course behind their factory. The idea was for me to use the Quattro Titanium fitted to a Jayco pop-top to manoeuvre it between the factory walls and some fencing, and around a tight corner. As I commented at the time, there would have been no way on God’ s green earth that anyone could have pulled it off the old fashioned way, with a car attached.
But with this little beauty fitted to the van, I was confident. As I‘ drove’ the van backwards, between the fencing and factory, I found that the Quattro moved slowly enough that you could walk around the van as you drove and steered it, with plenty of time to register and avoid obstacles.
You ' d never get the van around this corner the traditional way!
