ENERGY MATTERS

BY MAX TAYLOR
Fuel prices are going nuts. The world is reckoning with drastic disruption to its energy supply. And people are hoarding petrol and diesel as though it was toilet paper before a pandemic. Humans, it seems, are incapable of learning from history. Not every person, but enough to ensure we all have to feel pain once in a while.
Rather than dwell on the state of things, let’ s look at what’ s happening in the Australian van industry. While 2026 is shaping up to be a rough year, it will also be the year of the 48V electrical system. I’ m calling it now. Jayco has already unveiled a 48V system for some of its models, as have other manufacturers.
There’ s a host of reasons to opt for 48V, but the reality is, there’ s resistance( no pun intended) to it which, I think, is based more in a lack of understanding than anything else. We all grew up on 12V power. It’ s our comfort zone. Regardless, 48V power is here, and it’ s time to get on board.
Where this will lead us, I’ m not certain, but I sometimes do reminisce about the days of an ice box, a portable gas cooktop, and an old tent that was impossible to get back into its bag.
