LETTERS FROM THE ROAD

CARAVAN BREAK-IN
My wife, kids and I were camped on the Murray in early February. We left our van for the day and when we returned, we discovered that the door had been forced open and that someone had been through our things inside.
Fortunately, nothing was taken. We don’ t keep cash inside our caravan or anything else of real value. But the very thought of a stranger forcing his way in and then helping himself to our things left us feeling quite violated. We notified the police, of course, but we are not expecting anything to come of it. We’ ll just have to carry on.
But to all caravanners who read this, let our horrible experience be a reminder to you to ensure everything is a secure as it can be. We have since looked into caravan alarm systems, and we spared no expense to prevent this from happening again. We would strongly encourage all vanners to do the same.
QUICK TIP
I paid over $ 2.70 per litre for diesel this morning and I’ ve heard that in some places, it’ s as high as $ 2.90.
One of the simplest things that everyone can do to save on fuel is to keep their tyres inflated to the correct pressure. There are also some apps that will help you locate the cheapest fuel in your area. We use one called Petrol Spy Australia. It lets you compare prices and let’ s you know when it’ s the best time to buy. Anything you can do to save a bit now is more to spend on a proper trip!

Thanks for the tip, Paul. At the time of publication, more than 500 servos around the country had run out of fuel as prices continued to surge and hoarding took root. – Ed
