LETTERS FROM THE ROAD

THE SIMPLE LIFE
I loved your editorial in the previous issue( GoRV 109). My wife, Denyse, and I also reflect on one of our best around-Oz trips. It was 1987 and we had a 1986 Holden Commodore and a new 8ft offroad Cub camper. It was described as offroad as it had 13in wheels instead of 12in.
It had a tiny three-way fridge, 240V power, a gas stove, and I put a battery under the seat with a long lead connected to a 12V light so I could use it when not in a van park. I could use this light inside or outside if Denyse cooked a barbecue or camp oven dinner.
There were very few vans equipped for offroading then, so we had many beautiful campsites to ourselves. We took that Commodore to many out-of-theway spots, and used very little battery power. It was our second trip around the country, as we took a year to go around on our honeymoon in 1974 / 5, and apart from doing four tyres when coming out of Keep River National Park, we had no trouble.
Tony and Denyse Allsop ' s Cub camper circa 1987.
What a pity I’ m too old to do that trip again. Too many people travelling and too many sealed roads now, but I do have photos and memories.
