FUEL CRISIS
Mark and his better half inside their trusty converted Hiace.
I’ ve postponed this year ' s eightweek trip to the Kimberley because of the uncertainty of both the ridiculously high price of fuel and the availability in many rural and outback towns. The last three years have seen us travel for eight weeks at a time to remote destinations in our 4x4-converted HiAce; the more remote, the better.
Not this year, though – unfortunately. It’ s not worth either the high price or the risk. Instead, we’ ll tackle a handful of shorter trips closer to our home on the mid-north coast of New South Wales. The places we pick will see us camping in one spot for longer periods, reducing the amount of driving and fuel we use. Sure, we still need to purchase inflated food and dish out more for the experience overall, but at least we get our time away.
