A new caravan show was launched in Victoria earlier this month. Cranbourne is a south-eastern suburb of Melbourne, an unusual venue for a caravan show, right? But wait. There was method to the madness.

The plan: bring the show to the people. Caravan Industry Victoria looked at the van registration data, identifying the south-eastern corridor as a caravan and camping hotspot, and set-up locally.

As far as inaugural shows go, I’ d say it was a success. Despite touch-and-go weather, the locals made every opportunity to see hundreds of vans all in the one place. It reminded me of the pop-up show at the start of the year in Hobart, when dealership Coastal Caravans – hours away from the Tassie capital – brought their vans to the locals where they could count on a captive audience.

I’ ve heard whispers that changes are coming to the Victorian Supershow but it’ s all too early to tell. Will we see more of this‘ de-centralised’ approach to RV shows in this country? If I were a betting man, I’ d put a couple dollars on‘ yes’.
