TRAVELS WITH KINGDEANO ADVENTURES
Tucked away in the heart of Victoria’ s famous Golden Triangle, Dunolly is one of those country towns that quietly captures your attention and leaves you wondering why you hadn’ t visited sooner.
Rich in gold rush history, surrounded by bushland and filled with small-town charm, it makes the perfect weekend escape for history lovers, gold prospectors, cyclists and bushwalkers alike.
Adam and I booked a powered site at the Dunolly Caravan Park, a welcoming base within easy walking distance from town. Its camp kitchen became a social hub each evening, with travellers gathering around the fire to swap stories and share tales of their day’ s adventures.
The following morning, we set off on foot to explore the town’ s fascinating heritage. Our first stop was the Dunolly Historic Precinct, which beautifully showcases the wealth and ambition that flowed through central Victoria during the gold rush era. The precinct incorporates two significant sites: the impressive 1884 Town Hall and the 1863 courthouse, stables and lock-up. A self-guided walk through these buildings provided a fascinating glimpse into the town’ s colourful past. For anyone who enjoys exploring historic architecture and uncovering local stories, Dunolly is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered.
After a morning spent wandering the streets and soaking up history, we enjoyed our well-earned treat from the local bakery, where we struck up a conversation with a couple of friendly locals who shared some exciting news: a steam train would be passing through town on Sunday. It immediately became a highlight of our itinerary.
