TRAVELS WITH KINGDEANO ADVENTURES
Lunch shortly followed, where we enjoyed a meal at a charming café housed in what appeared to be a former bank dating back to the 1850s, complete with original bars still fitted to the windows. It was another reminder of how deeply history is woven into the fabric of this small town. We then spent that afternoon browsing through the town’ s antique shop and local gallery, both packed with character and unique finds.
As the winter chill settled in later that day, we returned to the caravan park and warmed ourselves with a hearty homemade minestrone soup. Watching the sun set over the park while enjoying a hot meal was the perfect way to end a relaxed day of exploring.
Sunday morning began with a visit to the Dunolly Museum, which offers a wonderful collection celebrating the town’ s rich heritage. Among the many displays was a replica of one of the largest gold nuggets ever discovered near the town, a truly impressive sight that helps bring the scale of the gold rush era to life.
Later, we joined a gathering of locals and visitors at the railway station to await the arrival of the steam train. Before long, we could hear its distant whistle and spot plumes of smoke rising above the treetops. When the magnificent locomotive finally rolled into view, it was every bit as spectacular as we had imagined and an unforgettable addition to an already memorable weekend.
While waiting at the station, a local pointed out another hidden gem: the historic cork oak tree that has stood beside the station for more than 140 years. Planted around 1890, with its enormous canopy of sprawling branches and thick, textured bark, it was a unique experience and one well worth seeking out.
If you’ re searching for a town filled with rich history, friendly locals and unexpected discoveries, don’ t overlook Dunolly. This charming Victorian town proves that some of the best travel experiences can still be found off the beaten track.
