FREEDOM CAMP OF THE MONTH
Lake Throssell Parking Area is a free bush camp on the Great Central Road in Western Australia, and it is our Freedom Camp of the Month for very good reason!
Look for the clearings a little further off the road: flat, shady sites, well protected from passing traffic, with more wildflowers than we ever expected out here. Fourwheel-drive is recommended.
We pulled in on our‘ Across the Centre’ road trip and it gave us the best sunrise and sunset of the whole journey. A campfire, red dirt underfoot, blue sky overhead, and wild flowers near the roads. Not bad for a spot with no facilities at all.
Lake Throssell is on the Great Central Road, part of what plenty of travellers call Australia ' s longest shortcut. This route links Winton, Qld, right across the Red Centre to Laverton, WA.
DOES
IT GET BETTER THAN THIS?

Free camps are ample along this stretch, so you are never short of a place to pull up for the night. One thing to plan for: as you travel west of Uluru, you need permits, which come with a time allocation. This means you can only stop for a few nights across this section, so it pays to map your camps before you set off, rather than working it out on the track.
