FREEDOM CAMP OF THE MONTH
We honestly thought we had timed it wrong for flowers. But if it rains in this desert, there is growth everywhere, and we rolled into colour we did not expect.
While Heatley and I caught up with some campsite auditing work, my sister cooked dinner and her husband hiked closer to the salt lake.
The area is also home to one of the desert ' s geological wonders, gnamma holes( a series of rockholes). Underground stores fill these deep, narrow holes in the granite outcrops, just like a natural tank. It is amazing how country out here holds on to every drop.
No facilities here, just red dirt and blue skies, so come self-sufficient with your own water, power and a way to carry out everything you bring in. The clearings further off the road give you flat, shady sites that are nicely protected from the road, which makes for a peaceful night. As always, leave no trace!
LAKE THROSSELL, WA
You will see Lake Throssell clearly marked in the Camps Australia Wide app, sitting west of Tjukayirla Roadhouse and east of Laverton. Just open the map or list and search the site name, and it will take you straight there.
