3. USING TECH
Technology is a great tool. There are many devices now to help you on your way and give you peace of mind. But don’ t be solely reliant on them. A GPS will be very useful for showing alternative routes, distances and times, but always cross check with a paper map. Gypsy, as we call her, can lead you down the wrong path, ending up in a tight spot, unable to turn.
Tools such as a tyre pressure monitoring system keep you safe and give assurance that your tyres are okay, saving you from a potentially dangerous situation and a lot of expense. It still doesn’ t hurt to have a walk around the car and RV to inspect things when you take a break – it’ s a good habit.
GPS is great but a paper backup is crucial.
4. ON-ROAD COMMS
UHF radio’ s are also handy. If you are travelling with others, make sure you are in a channel that is not interfering with the work channels of other users. The truck drivers use channel 40, so talk to them if you can see a good passing spot or to let them know what you’ re doing. Good communication works well for both parties. Caravanners generally use channel 18.
5. PLANNING PAYS
If you’ re travelling in a busy time, planning may be necessary. Caravan parks can book out quickly, so if you decide on a park for the night, it will pay to ring ahead.
If you plan to free-camp, check out all the nearby options. There are low-cost campgrounds, recreation reserves and showgrounds as well as free sites beside some local water or in the bush. Just remember to be aware and check for any potential danger from rain or fire. Getting bogged or, worse, swept away in a flash flood can happen suddenly, as can a bushfire.
