LETTERS FROM THE ROAD

BETTER SERVICE NEEDED
I’ m a Victorian and I saw on the news recently about a major pothole that opened up on the Princes Highway near Bunyip. Something like 30 vehicles were damaged as a result and overall, it caused mayhem on the highway. It was like the highway had fallen apart.
So my question is, at what point does the government take responsibility for the damage to people’ s property? We pay for the upkeep of these roads and when they fall apart, causing damage to vehicles and potentially worse, does the government not have a responsibility to make it right for those who were affected?
When I was looking into it a bit more, I learned that there was yet another incident involving a large pothole in nearby Nar Nar Goon. Victoria’ s roads are falling apart while the government spends money on mobile phone cameras and automatic number plate recognition – anything to raise money, but do they spend it to fix the roads or reimburse people when the roads cause damage to their cars? Of course not. We are a joke.
Can you imagine towing a caravan, with every reasonable expectation that the road is in good condition, only to round a bend and slam straight into a huge pothole? The damage to property and probably even to life doesn’ t bear thinking about.

Thanks for your letter, Ed. I could not agree more. In theory, the Victorian government does provide reimbursements for damage caused by potholes, but being successful in your claim is reportedly near impossible, which I’ m sure is by design. – Ed
WATERFRONT WINNER
Just a quick note to thank you as well as Alison and Peter Huth for your article about Waterfront Holiday Park. My husband and I were en route to South Australia with our van when you published your last issue. I was looking at it on my phone as Richard drove. I read the article and we booked immediately.
Alison, your sentiments about the park, not to mention the sunsets, were spot-on. Thanks again.
