POTHOLE PRANGS

I refer to the letter in issue # 114 re better service needed. Whilst I agree with Ed ' s letter, I must add that in my opinion there are other factors at play as well.

One is speed and the other is the gap between vehicles. High speed and small gaps means no reaction time upon spotting a possible problem.

I live less than 10km from the Bunyip, Vic, pothole site and note that when this incident took place, some 25 to 30 vehicles were involved. That is a very small number given the number of vehicles on the M1 at the time. I suggest that excess speed and the gap between vehicles are also factors at work. I regularly drive along that section of the highway, which is signed at 80km / h. This speed limit is totally ignored by a very large number of drivers.

Apart from the poor maintenance, the other big problem is the section of the M1 between the Bunyip River and Nar Nar Goon – it is simply not up to standard for a motorway with multiple intersections, side roads and private accesses.

Thanks Mike, you’ re right about that section of road between Bunyip River and Nar Nar Goon. I drive it regularly. The state of our roads boggles the mind. – Ed

MORE TIPS FOR TRIPS!

Most vans would have an outside tap that allows you to wash hands easily without going inside. We keep a small piece of soap( motel ones are good) in a plastic mesh( veggie bag) tied to the tap. Easy access to soap that doesn’ t make a mess on the van! Safe travels, everyone.
