When transporting LPG cylinders in the Northern Territory, use an open ute tray or trailer wherever possible. Keep each cylinder upright and securely restrained, close the valve tightly, and protect it from heat, damage and loose objects.
Do not carry gas cylinders inside an enclosed vehicle unless they are secured in a purpose-built cabinet that is sealed from the vehicle and vented outside. Generally, no more than two standard 9kg cylinders should be carried in the cabinet.
QUICK SAFETY TIPS
If you must transport your gas cylinder inside your vehicle, be sure to follow these safety tips:
• If transporting a gas cylinder inside your vehicle, ensure there is plenty of ventilation to the outside;
• Ensure the main cylinder valves are tightly closed and the safety cap is fitted;
• There is no leakage from the main valve area( use a gas detector or test with soapy water);
• Cylinders are secured in an upright position to prevent them tipping or falling over;
• Cylinders cannot be struck by other objects such as loose tools;
• Cylinders are always removed from the vehicle before the gas is used; and
• At least one 10B dry-powder fire extinguisher is fitted in the driver’ s cabin.
