Pelican Island has just had an amenities block added to the centre of the island, which is very handy. There is one interesting feature of this park: communal water taps on the islands. So you connect for power but not for water. However, you can still use your water as if you were connected because there is a hose that reaches all sites to refill your water tank. We did this when we needed to, as did others on the island. It was easy and not a problem.
You can go fishing in the lake, but it has a catch-and-release policy. If you want to keep your fish, a walk down to the river is the answer. There’ s a fishing platform there and you can keep what you catch.
Walking around, we found the camp kitchen. It’ s very open and has plenty of tables and benches. There’ s also a little beach here with a beach volleyball area. But the big plus here are the kayaks. They are there for you to borrow for a paddle around the islands.
Given the amount of land, it would be easy to just ignore the area not being used for caravans, but they don’ t. The whole area is kept in excellent condition – we saw someone mowing every day. The roads have also had road base added so there’ s minimum dust when you are driving though the park.
