LETTERS FROM THE ROAD
RULES ARE RULES
Regarding your article about caravan park rules, this is a tricky subject with no easy solution. I would also extend the rules issue to other sites such as showgrounds, Hipcamps and campgrounds, both free and paid.
Unless parked in a remote area away from crowds, most places to park a van are communal sites. Rules are necessary to protect the property and the reputation of sites.
While I don ' t like to generalise, we ' ve seen the issues: dog poo not picked up, loud parties, rubbish dumped and not tidied up, noise too loud or late at night, lengthy showers, camp kitchens left in a mess, dogs undisciplined, property damage, etc.
One of the showgrounds we stayed at, the manger was frustrated as passersby( not paid campers) were not only using the dump point but putting in rubbish and it was constantly costing a lot of money to get it fixed.
He had been forced to lock the dump point and charge people not staying at the site $ 10 to use the facility. He was copping a lot of flack but who was to blame? Not him.
The opposite can also apply. At one of the sites we stayed, management was very strict. We got a loud knock on our door to‘ tell us off’ for hanging washing over the fence we were parked next to. Management claimed there was a sign. There wasn’ t, and I thought that was a degree of control that was over the top.
Yes, rules can be frustrating but based on what we have experienced in our travels, they are there to keep things for the owners / management more civilised and pleasant for their staff and customers.

PIGS GO CAMPING TOO
To the idiot who left soft drink cans, toilet paper and goodness knows what else behind at Cape Conran Coastal Park, Vic, I hope karma catches up to you. My wife and I spent ages cleaning up before we set-up our own campsite. People, please: if you take it in, take it out. Caravanners cop enough flak as it is without everyone thinking we’ re a bunch of pigs.
