OUR EXPERIENCES
Our volunteer work with National Parks over the years has been quite varied . We ’ ve done typical campground hosting duties at parks such as Lashmar Conservation Park on Kangaroo Island and in Flinders Ranges National Park in outback South Australia . This entailed being available for a minimum of four hours daily ( usually two hours in the morning and another two in the evening ) to help fellow campers with any queries or issues , as well as keeping the campground and facilities tidy .
This helps to offload those duties from the rangers so they can focus on their many other jobs around the park .
It s not all work and no play being a campground host ; you still get to enjoy time off while on placement ( location : Flinders Ranges National Park , SA ).
Campground hosts often get discounted entry to certain attractions , such as Seal Bay Conservation Park on Kangaroo Island , SA .
Outside of those hours , our days were ours to spend as we chose , exploring the park or relaxing in the campground ‘ off duty ’.
For these placements , after the orientation on the first day we were expected to work fairly independently ; however , the rangers were always just a call away if we ever needed them . In exchange for this , we were able to stay at the campground free of charge . We also often had the option of visiting attractions associated with the national park at a discounted rate , such as Seal Bay Conservation Park on Kangaroo Island .
