We found that in the more remote national parks , we were more likely to have the opportunity to do more than just the traditional campground host duties if we wanted to . Because these parks tend to have fewer resources and employees available , the rangers usually appreciate a helping hand with some of the laborious tasks required to keep the park running .
Some of the more remote national parks require additional training , such as 4WD certification ( location : Flinders Ranges National Park , SA ).
In Gawler Ranges National Park , we got to spend a couple of days with the head ranger helping with maintenance around the park , learning all sorts of interesting facts about the local flora and fauna along the way .
In Purnululu National Park , we helped clear walking paths while the Indigenous rangers taught us about bush tucker and areas of significance to them and their ancestors .
These were some of the many memorable experiences we had while volunteering , which was much more unique than what we would have seen had we simply visited on our own .
